The fastest way to shortcut success in any area of your life.
On this episode Russell talks about how having coaches in different parts of your life is like having a shortcut to success. Here are some of the insightful things you will hear in today’s episode:
-- Find out why watching his daughter have a one on one soccer practice made Russell remember that he needed more coaching in his life.
-- Hear about why Russell and his wife Collette, still find it beneficial to go to a marriage retreat, even though they have had a mostly successful marriage for 17 years.
-- And find out how Russell has been able to tune coaches out in wrestling and only listen when he needed them, and how that relates to his business life.
So listen here to find out why getting coaching is basically a shortcut to success.
So for me in business, obviously, I’m very coachable and I look for coaches. I’m like, ‘I need a coach for this, and a coach for this.” And I try to get coaches for all the things. Every time I have a gap in what my skill set is, I hire a coach, and the coach helps me get through that thing, and it’s awesome, and then I solve the problem, and then we keep on moving forward.

What’s up everybody? This is Russell Brunson, welcome back to
the Marketing Secrets podcast. I hope you guys are excited because
I got something really fun to share with you guys today.
So I just dropped my daughter off. Actually, I was going to drop
her off, then I got so excited that I sat there for the last hour,
for her very first one on one soccer practice. It’s funny, she’s
been playing soccer now for, I think 7 or 8 seasons, she’s getting
really, really good, she’s loving it, all the things. And she’s
getting good with her team, growing. And it’s funny because it’s
seems, I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but sometimes we’re really
good at one part of our life, but then we forget about other
parts.
So for me in business, obviously, I’m very coachable and I look
for coaches. I’m like, ‘I need a coach for this, and a coach for
this.” And I try to get coaches for all the things. Every time I
have a gap in what my skill set is, I hire a coach, and the coach
helps me get through that thing, and it’s awesome, and then I solve
the problem, and then we keep on moving forward.
And we had something similar when I was wrestling, it was the
same thing. My dad would always find coaches. At first I would go
to practice and my coach would coach me, and I got to a certain
level, but then my dad’s like, ‘Ugh, you’re not progressing fast
enough, let me get another coach.” So my dad became the coach and
he’d come after practice and wrestle with me more, and I got even
better and started growing faster than everybody else around me.
Then my dad starts seeking out other coaches and he finds, who are
the high school that their teams are winning? And my dad would
drive me to those high schools and have those coaches coach me.
We’d find out who are the freestyle and Greco clubs where the kids
are winning, and we’d drive and find those coaches and have them
coach me.
I got coaching from so many amazing coaches growing up to make
me an amazing wrestler, and because I think of that lesson, I’ve
done the same thing in business, getting tons of coaches. And I
kind of forgot about that for my kids. I’ve failed. So I’ve had
them in coaching and I’m watching and every season they get better
and better. It wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago when I was
talking to one of my friends and he told me there was this local
soccer coach who lives here and he’s one of the best players in the
world, and I guess he moved here from Brazil and he does one on
ones with the soccer player.
And I was like, oh my gosh, I need, what was I thinking? Why
haven’t I done that yet? So I called him up and hired him and they
had their very first one on one practice today, and I watched, for
the last hour, I watched her doing all these drills and these
amazing things. And I was like, oh my gosh, if I do this once a
week or twice a week with her, three times a week, she will get, in
the next twelve months she will have basically done four or five
soccer seasons. But even probably more than that because she’s
getting this personalized one on one attention with her skill sets
and her drills and all these kind of things like.
It’s like in a year she could grow what takes most people four
or five years to grow. I remember in wrestling I would look back
and the same, my sophomore year I wrestled these guys and then
after the season ended I would go and do freestyle, I would do
Greco, so I’d get in another 80 matches during the season between
freestyle and Greco. I’d go wrestle with 8 different coaches, I’d
go to the college and wrestle with college kids, and all these
things. And I’d come back the next season and the same guys who
were maybe as good as me, maybe a little worse, maybe a little
better the year prior, I’d come in and thrash them. They were like
little babies I was wrestling, they were so soft and tender and
easy.
I’m like, how in world? “What’d you guys do this summer?”
They’re like, “Nothing, Just waited until the season started.” I’m
like, man, between the season and the next season I got in probably
four or five seasons worth of practice and matches and things like
that. So when we come back it’s like, I’m 5 years ahead of you
now.
So I’m thinking about that now with my daughter and I’m watching
her at the soccer practice, I’m like, I’m doing the same thing with
my sons. They’re really good wrestlers, and they’re learning, and
I’m coaching them and they’re going to the high school, but I just
haven’t been consistent, it’s hard to coach your own kids, and I
was like, you know what? Screw it. (I probably shouldn’t say that
in a podcast, that’s the worst you will hear from Russell.) You
know what, I’m just going to do it.
So I went and during watching my daughter doing her soccer
practice one on ones, I messaged a guy I know who’s a really good
wrestler here. His name’s Levi Jones, he’s actually a funnel hacker
too, which is exciting. So he’s one of our people. But he’s got
wrestling camps he does, he’s got a training program and stuff like
that. And I was like, I messaged him, “Levi can I hire you to come
2 or 3 times a week and just wrestle with my kids and help them
between and for forever.” And he messaged me back 5 seconds later,
“Done.” Now we’ve got him booked and he’s coming to help my
kids.
And I’m like, oh my gosh, why do we do this to ourselves? So
many times we get stuck in a problem, and it could be anything in
life, it could be your relationship, your marriage, your business
or whatever. And we sit in this thing and we’re like, “We’re going
to work on it. We’re going to incrementally get better.” You know
my wife and I, and she’s the most amazing human on earth, for 17
years of our marriage, we’ve been having a great marriage and we’re
always trying to get better, but there’s been hiccups and problems,
but we just kind of wait through it like, maybe if we wait through
it, it’ll get better. And that’s been, honestly, the pattern for a
long time.
At least it was for the first probably 7 years of our marriage,
and then we had a chance to go to a Tony Robbins event, and I think
I talked about that, if you listen to the podcast episode a little
while ago with my wife, and that gave us a new tool set, and we
increased as a couple and so many amazing things happened from
that. And then we didn’t do anything after that for I don’t even
know, almost a decade and it’s been funny.
So last week we went to Stacy and Paul Martino’s relationship
development event. And it’s for marriages, but relationships, and
all your relationships. And in a three day period of time, I got
more skills and more things to help my relationship than I would
have gotten in ten years of being married. So in a three day period
of time we shortcut ten years of us dinking around on our own
trying to figure things out. And so I progressed in a weekend more
than I would have in a year or a couple of years, and probably, we
may never have found these skill sets on our own. In fact, I’m sure
we wouldn’t have, so it shortcut it.
So I look and man, that’s three days. And I look at just my
marriage alone since we’ve been back for a couple of weeks now, it
is noticeably different because of the different skill set, the
different tools that we have because of it. And it’s
fascinating.
And I started thinking about that for myself, what are the other
areas of my life where I need to re-double down in coaching.
Because Tony Robbins says this all the time, you can compress
decades into days, and it’s like, I need to do that. I need to do
it more often.
So I’m re-doing that right now. I know I’ve talked about this
over the last 5 or 6 years more than once, but I wanted to kind of,
I’m re-committing myself, and I wanted to give you guys the ability
to recommit as well. So for my kids, I’m going to try and find
specific coaches for the things that they’re excited about, that
they want to become better at, so I can help them grow decades in
days. I’m going to find for myself other areas of my life, it can
be my relationships, it can be business, could be traffic
generating, could be writing, could be whatever.
So it’s focusing on those things and finding the right coaches
to bring in to increase it. I know with Clickfunnels alone, we’ve
been, I don’t know, businesses at this level there’s so many
things, so many things you can work on, so many things. And one of
the things we’ve been very conscious of lately is our customer
support and how to make it better. So recently Todd went and hired
some insane amount, some company, some team, paid them a ton of
money to come in and help increase and make our support better.
There’s all these different things, and I value coaching so much,
and I’ve kind of forgotten about it, because I’m so much in the
weeds with so many things in my life right now that I forget that
sometimes I’m in the weeds because I don’t have a coach to point it
out.
Like in wrestling, it’s funny, I would go out on the mat, and I
don’t know if you guys have ever been in the zone before, that’s
probably the best way to, the best things to call it, but the zone
for me is like when I come in and I start wrestling, and I get all
the nerves ahead of time. I walk out on the mat, the whistle blows,
I shake hands, and then everything disappears and I’m this weird
thing where I don’t hear anything, I’m just doing the thing. And
instinct, like your subconscious mind and these things start
picking up and you start doing whatever you’ve been trained to do,
and you get better and better and better.
And then what was interesting, every time I’d get stuck, or I’d
get caught on something, or I’d get thrown on my back, something
where I’m like, I don’t know what to do. All the sudden, I would
never hear any, I’d never hear my coaches, never hear the crowd or
anything. But as soon as I’d get stuck I remember I could hear my
dad’s voice or my coaches voice. I never heard them, they could be
yelling, screaming bloody murder, I wouldn’t even hear it. But as
soon as I’d get stuck or get caught on something, all the sudden my
ears would tune into them, and I could hear what they could say. No
matter where they were at, in the gym, in the wrestling room, it
was crazy. I could hear my dad and my coach, the two voices I was
tuned into, saying what I would need to do, and I’d make the
adjustments. And then as soon as I was back into my flow state it
would disappear again.
And I feel like I’ve been in that flow state in business for so
long where I’ve kind of tuned out all the coaches, and now I’m
trying to consciously stop and listen. Let me tune into the voices
that I trust, to be able to look from an outside perspective, and
be like, “you need to tweak here, change here, this is the shift
you need to make. So anyway, that’s where I’m at. I’m going to
consciously do it, again, for my kids, for myself, in business, in
relationships, in different parts of my life, and I want to
encourage you guys to do it as well.
Find out where you’re lacking, find out where you’re struggling
and find a coach to help you. It doesn’t have to be me, it could be
whoever you are that provides the relief, the help, the insights
you need for this situation you’re in now.
So I hope that helps. Appreciate you guys for listening, with
that said, I’m going back in to keep writing the traffic secrets
book. I’ve got three weeks to get this book completed, which is
crazy because in that 3 weeks I also have a three day event where
I’m onstage every day for 3 days. So I basically got two weeks to
finish this book, and I’m not even halfway done yet. So,
conceptually I’m done. All the concepts are done in my head and
outlined and everything, it’s just the writing process. So I’m
going to go in and try to get a chapter done today. Appreciate you
all, I hope you’re doing amazing and I’ll talk to you all again
soon. Bye everybody.
